Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. At Didsbury Dental Lounge in Fallowfield, we offer both NHS and private crown options to suit your needs and budget.

When Might You Need a Crown?

Crowns are recommended when a tooth has been significantly damaged by decay, fracture, or wear and can no longer be restored with a simple filling. They are also used after root canal treatment, to support a dental bridge, or to improve the appearance of a discoloured or misshapen tooth. If you have a large filling that is starting to fail, a crown can provide long-term protection and prevent further breakage.

Types of Crowns We Offer

We provide several types of dental crowns depending on the location of the tooth and your personal preferences. Porcelain crowns offer the most natural appearance and are ideal for front teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine strength with aesthetics and work well for back teeth. For patients who want the strongest option, gold or metal alloy crowns are extremely durable and long-lasting. Our dentists will recommend the best option based on your specific situation.

What to Expect During Treatment

The crown procedure typically requires two visits. During the first appointment, we prepare the tooth by removing a thin layer of enamel to make room for the crown. We then take detailed impressions and fit you with a temporary crown while your permanent one is crafted by our dental laboratory. At your second visit, we remove the temporary crown, check the fit and colour match of the new crown, and cement it permanently in place. The whole process is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel any pain.

Caring for Your Crown

With good oral hygiene, dental crowns can last 10 to 15 years or more. Brush twice daily, floss around the crown carefully, and attend your regular check-ups at our Fallowfield practice. Avoid biting down on very hard foods like ice or hard sweets, and if you grind your teeth at night, let us know — we can provide a night guard to protect your crown.
