A dental bridge fills the gap left by one or more missing teeth, using the neighbouring teeth as anchors. At Didsbury Dental Lounge in Fallowfield, we create bridges that look natural and restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
Why Replace Missing Teeth?
Gaps from missing teeth can cause the surrounding teeth to shift position over time, affecting your bite and the alignment of your jaw. Missing teeth can also make chewing difficult and may affect the way you speak. A bridge prevents these problems by filling the space with a fixed prosthetic tooth (or teeth) that is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap.
Types of Dental Bridges
The most common type is a traditional bridge, where crowns are placed on the teeth either side of the gap to support the replacement tooth in between. Cantilever bridges are used when there are teeth on only one side of the gap. Maryland (adhesive) bridges use a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth and are less invasive. For patients missing several teeth, implant-supported bridges may be recommended. We will assess your situation and recommend the best approach.
The Bridge Procedure
A bridge usually takes two appointments. At the first visit, we prepare the anchor teeth by reshaping them slightly to accommodate the supporting crowns. Impressions are taken and sent to our dental laboratory, where your bridge is custom-made. A temporary bridge protects the prepared teeth in the meantime. At the second visit, we fit your permanent bridge, check the bite, and make any necessary adjustments before bonding it securely in place.
Maintaining Your Bridge
With proper care, dental bridges typically last 10 to 15 years. Keep the area around your bridge clean using a floss threader or interdental brushes, as food can accumulate underneath the replacement tooth. Attend your regular check-ups at our Fallowfield practice so we can monitor the health of your bridge and the supporting teeth.
