What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, bleeding, or damage to a tooth that needs immediate attention. Common emergencies include severe toothache that painkillers are not controlling, a tooth that has been knocked out or loosened by an injury, a chipped or broken tooth with sharp edges cutting into your mouth, a lost filling or crown leaving the tooth exposed, swelling in the face, jaw, or gums (which may indicate an abscess), or bleeding that will not stop after dental treatment or injury.

What to Do Before You Reach Us

If a tooth has been knocked out, hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with milk or saliva, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it in milk or inside your cheek and get to us as quickly as you can — the sooner a knocked-out tooth is re-implanted, the better the chance of saving it. For severe toothache, over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen can help manage the pain until your appointment. If you have facial swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing, go directly to A&E.

How We Handle Emergencies

When you call our Fallowfield practice with an emergency, we will assess the urgency over the phone and book you in as soon as possible — usually the same day. During your appointment, we focus on relieving your pain and stabilising the problem. This might involve prescribing antibiotics for an infection, performing an emergency extraction, re-cementing a crown, or providing a temporary filling. Once the immediate issue is resolved, we will discuss any follow-up treatment needed.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While not all emergencies can be avoided, regular check-ups help catch problems like cracks, weakened fillings, and early decay before they become urgent. If you play contact sports, wearing a custom-made mouthguard can protect your teeth from impact injuries. And if you grind your teeth at night, a night guard can prevent fractures and excessive wear. Prevention is always simpler and less expensive than emergency treatment.
