Tooth Extractions

Sometimes a tooth needs to be removed. Whether it is due to severe decay, infection, crowding, or damage that cannot be repaired, our team at Didsbury Dental Lounge makes the process as straightforward and comfortable as possible.

When Is an Extraction Necessary?

We always try to save a tooth first, but extraction becomes the right option when a tooth is too badly decayed or broken to repair, when there is a severe infection that antibiotics and root canal treatment cannot resolve, when teeth are overcrowded and need to be removed ahead of orthodontic treatment, or when wisdom teeth are causing pain or growing at an angle that affects nearby teeth. Your dentist will explain why an extraction is recommended and discuss any alternatives before proceeding.

What Happens During an Extraction

Simple extractions are performed under local anaesthetic and usually take just a few minutes. The area around the tooth is numbed completely before the tooth is gently loosened and removed. For more complex cases, such as impacted wisdom teeth or teeth that have broken below the gum line, a surgical extraction may be needed. We will always explain the procedure to you in advance so you know exactly what to expect.

Recovery and Aftercare

After an extraction, we provide clear aftercare instructions to help you heal quickly. A blood clot forms in the socket to protect the bone underneath — it is important not to disturb this. We recommend soft foods for the first day or two, avoiding smoking and drinking through straws, and gently rinsing with warm salt water after 24 hours. Most patients feel back to normal within a few days. If you experience any unexpected pain or swelling, contact our Fallowfield practice and we will see you promptly.

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

Once you have healed, we can discuss options for replacing the missing tooth if needed. Depending on your situation, this could include a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture. Replacing a missing tooth helps prevent the surrounding teeth from shifting and keeps your bite balanced. We will guide you through the options and find the best solution for your situation.
