Tooth decay does not always cause pain in its early stages, which is why regular check-ups are so important. You may need a filling if you experience sensitivity to hot or cold foods, a visible hole or dark spot on a tooth, pain when biting down, or food frequently getting stuck in a particular area. During your examination, our dentists use visual inspection and X-rays to detect decay that may not be visible to the naked eye.

We offer several filling materials to suit different needs. Composite (white) fillings are matched to your natural tooth colour and are the most popular choice for visible teeth. Amalgam (silver) fillings remain a strong, durable option that is available through NHS treatment. Glass ionomer fillings release fluoride and are sometimes used for areas near the gum line or for children. Our team will explain the options and help you decide which material is best for your tooth.

Getting a filling is straightforward and usually completed in a single appointment. We numb the area with local anaesthetic so you will not feel any discomfort. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed, the cavity is cleaned, and the filling material is placed and shaped to match your bite. For composite fillings, we use a special light to harden the material. Most patients are in and out within 30 to 45 minutes.

Fillings can last many years with the right care. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, and keep up with your regular dental check-ups at our Fallowfield practice.
